Stop Trying to Be the “Best Version” of Yourself

Stop Trying to Be the “Best Version” of Yourself

There’s a phrase we hear all the time in the world of personal growth:

“Become the best version of yourself.”

It sounds inspiring.
Motivating.
Like something we should all be striving toward.

But the more I’ve reflected on it…
the more I’ve realised something important.

Chasing your “best self” can quietly turn into chasing perfection.

And that’s exhausting.

When Self-Improvement Becomes Self-Pressure

At first, the idea feels empowering.

You want to grow.
You want to evolve.
You want to become more confident, more capable, more aligned.

But somewhere along the way, that intention can shift.

Instead of growing from a place of curiosity,
you start improving from a place of pressure.

You begin to ask yourself:

Am I doing enough?
Am I disciplined enough?
Am I showing up as my “best self” today?

And without realising it, you create a new standard to live up to.

A new version of yourself to chase.

A version that feels just slightly out of reach.

The Hidden Cost of Chasing Your “Best Self”

The problem with this mindset is that it often disconnects you from who you are right now.

Because if you’re always focused on becoming better…
it’s easy to feel like who you are today isn’t enough.

You start to overlook your needs.
Push past your limits.
Silence your intuition.

All in the name of growth.

But growth that requires you to abandon yourself…
isn’t really growth.

It’s performance.

What If You Focused on Being Your Most Honest Self Instead?

Instead of asking, “How can I be better?”
what if you asked, “How can I be more honest?”

More honest about what you want.
More honest about what you need.
More honest about what feels aligned — and what doesn’t.

Because your most honest self:

Is the version of you that rests when she’s tired.
The version that says no when something doesn’t feel right.
The version that stops performing for approval.
The version that allows herself to be seen — not perfect, but real.

And that version of you?

She doesn’t need to be chased.

She’s already here.

Redefining Growth

We’ve been taught that growth looks like constant improvement.

Becoming more productive.
More disciplined.
More successful.

But real growth is often quieter than that.

It looks like self-awareness.
It looks like self-trust.
It looks like making choices that feel true — even when they don’t look impressive.

Growth isn’t about becoming someone better.

It’s about becoming someone more you.

Letting Go of the Pressure to Be Perfect

You don’t need to optimise every part of your life.

You don’t need to turn yourself into a project.

You don’t need to constantly be working on becoming “better.”

You are allowed to be human.

To have off days.
To change your mind.
To rest.
To not have it all together.

Because the goal of life isn’t to perfect yourself.

It’s to know yourself.

A Gentle Reframe

Instead of asking:

“Am I being my best self?”

Try asking:

“Am I being honest with myself?”

That question will take you further.

Because honesty leads to alignment.
And alignment leads to a life that actually feels good to live.

If you’ve been feeling the pressure to be your “best self” lately…

Let this be your reminder:

You don’t need to become someone else to live a meaningful life.

You don’t need to perform your growth.

You don’t need to chase perfection.

You are allowed to be real.

To be honest.
To be human.
To be you.

Because that’s where everything begins.

Where in my life am I trying to be “better”… instead of being more honest with myself?
