How to overcome 'FOPO' - Fear of Other People's Opinions
Do you worry about what other people think of you? We tend to worry about others’ opinions because deep down, we think our survival depends on their approval.
In fact, I recently came across the term FOPO, which stands for Fear of Other People's Opinions. I think we all suffer from FOPO from time to time because we're human beings after all... We have this evolutionary need to be accepted by our tribe. It makes sense if you think about how humans used to live…
If you weren’t accepted by the members of your tribe, you risked being excommunicated and that meant you had to fend for yourself. You were solely responsible for your own survival and your chances of successfully fending for yourself when completely alone were slim.
We’ve evolved an enormous amount since our tribal days. Being liked, fitting in and being accepted by everyone, no longer dictates our likelihood of survival. What other people think of you can't harm you. It’s your fears about being judged that can. Your fears hold you back from embracing your authentic self and keep you small.
It’s so strange how we get so caught up in caring what other people think of us and whether they like us, yet we don’t like everyone else in this world.
The reality is, it is safe to be you. It is your birthright to grow into the full expression of your authentic self.
Set yourself free from the fear of judgment and criticism. Take back your power and give yourself the permission to start living your beautiful life!
